Booking a videographer is an investment, and a little preparation goes a long way. Here are our tips for finding the right person and getting a result you’ll love.
1. Be clear on your goal
Before you reach out, think about what the video is really for — a wedding film to treasure, a brand video to win customers, an event recap for social media. The clearer you are, the easier it is for a videographer to tell you whether they’re the right fit.
2. Watch the showreel closely
A showreel is a videographer’s calling card. Look beyond the pretty shots — pay attention to pacing, storytelling, sound and editing. Does their style match the feel you’re going for?
3. Check they’ve shot your type of project
A brilliant wedding filmmaker isn’t always the right choice for a corporate shoot, and vice versa. Use the filters to find videographers who specialise in exactly what you need.
4. Talk about budget early
Be upfront about your budget. Good videographers would rather know your range from the start so they can suggest what’s realistic — whether that’s a full production crew or a lean, single-shooter setup.
5. Ask the right questions
A few worth asking before you book:
- Are you available on my date?
- What’s included — filming, editing, music licensing, revisions?
- How long until I receive the finished video?
- Do you have insurance and backup equipment?
- Can I see a full example, not just a highlights reel?
6. Get the details in writing
Once you’ve agreed, confirm the key points — date, location, deliverables, timeline and price — in writing. It protects both sides and keeps everyone on the same page.
7. Think about deliverables and timelines
Be clear on what you’re getting: how many videos, what length, which formats (social, web or broadcast) and when. Agreeing this upfront avoids surprises later.
